Breakdown of Management Styles

There are many different types of management styles, and each of them can be used effectively. The type of management style that leaders use doesn’t necessarily cause them to be a good or bad leader. That being said, knowing someone’s management style can help you to be able to understand how they think and will help you to work together better. Listed below are four of the main management styles.

Democratic Management

This type of management is also known as participative leadership. The manager will allow others within the company to vote on the direction of the company and how different rules and policies will be structured. A democratic manager will may still strongly suggest how he wants certain things done, but in the end, it is a group decision. 

Authoritarian Management

Authoritarian management is the style of management that is usually seen as a negative, but it doesn’t have to be. The reason that some people view this as a negative management style is that the leader makes all important decisions on his or her own. Generally, this leader also will place strict rules to encourage maximum efficiency from employees. An authoritarian manager may be more strict, but this type of management can be very effective as long as the manager isn’t too prideful.

Delegative Management

Depending on the employees, this style of management can either be really successful or quite unsuccessful. The manager will take many important tasks and essentially give them to different employees to complete as they see fit. This type of management will work well in a start-up environment or in an environment where the employees are extremely self-driven and can work independently without direct supervision. Delative management also allows other employees to take on a lot more responsibility. 

Servant Managnetm

These types of managers often look for ways to come alongside and help the people they are leading. The servant management style is one that helps others first and leads second. This management style can work quite well when people are self-motivated and are passionate about the mission that they are working towards.

There are many different types of management styles. Each style can be effective depending on the environment and depending on the personality of the leader.
